Amendment 1 to Section 12-102 puts framing at sixteen inches on center and permits rafters at twenty-four inches only where the roof sheathing is at least five-eighths-inch plywood with approved clips or three-quarter-inch boards.
The exact words are that rafters not nailed directly to ceiling joists must be installed at the wall plate with approved metal fastening straps, which the ordinance itself calls hurricane clips. Before we price a re-deck or a rafter repair in this town, that is the clause we read first.
Honesty about where that language came from: Somerville's code, ten miles north, carries the same amendment with two extra clauses attached.
